My undergraduate degree is from the University of Sussex, and my Masters and Ph.D from Columbia University. I have been living in New York City since 1984 (or since before many of my youngest students were born). I am an urban sociologist, with a background in sociological theory, and a keen interest in cyberspace.

I have developed a set of web-based teaching tools with programmer Bill Restemeyer. You can find these at www.teachtools.com. In recent years I have spent an inordinate amount of time developing teaching techniques with these tools. You can find the latest of these at www.webteaching.org.

I live in Cobble Hill with my wife, the artist, Bonnie Steinsnyder. You can find her art work at www.steinsnyder.com. We have a son, Zander, 6, who loves the subway, and has already ridden every line in the system.
